Track Your Website’s Hits, Countries, Search Queries…
Google Analytics is the tool I use. I must admit, I haven’t tried anything else. But that’s because Google Analytics already gives me more than enough information and I live by the idea that “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
All you do is put some HTML/JavaScript code down the bottom of each page you want to be tracked and within a few minutes, Google starts tracking your life *cough* I mean, your website.
It’s completely free and you’re not forced to put a link back to Google on your site. I suspect they use the information collected for much more than we know. But oh well, Google’s going to take over the world anyway it’s inevitable. We should all just accept it!
You can track as many site as you want, through the same account. You can even set up multiple Analytics accounts through the one Google account. Confused? It’s not really important, but I’ll explain anyway.
You have your Google account.
Then you have your Google Analytics account. You can set up more than one of these.
Then you can seperate your websites, I guess.
So I’ll give you a quick rundown of what it will find out for you:
- Hits
- Visits
- Visitors
- Pages per Visit
- Average Page Views
- What pages were visited
- Bounce rate (how many users come to your site, then close it after the first page)
- Average time on site
- % New Visits
- What country users come from (can even break it down into city sometimes)
- Referrers (search engine, referring sites, direct)
- Search query used to find your site
- User’s Browser
- Their internet connection
- (the list goes on)
It also has some rather unique features like Goal tracking.
You can set up a goal. Say you have a shopping cart, you can set it up to see how many people went through with the sale, how many people dropped out at what step, and how much money was made.
There are WAY TOO MANY feautures to try to explain here. You just have to try it out!
