Social Networks, Embrace Them!

August 14th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

The big secret to running successful websites is simple – keep up with the trends. You may think that Facebook and Twitter are stupid (I agree), but if you embrace the social networking phenomenon, it can be a very very powerful marketing tool.

Twitter is easy!

If you haven’t heard of it, it’s basically the status update thing from Facebook, in a standalone form. The great thing about Twitter is you don’t need to write an essay. 140 characters and you are done. So basically, you write what you are currently doing / looking at and maybe a link (which gets automatically tinyurled).

Like any website promotion like this, make sure you keep your profile / page updated. At least once a week, make an effort. Check out a few other people’s pages, make a few comments, become part of the community.

Facebook Hangers

Facebook. If you haven’t heard of it, you must’ve just gotten the Internet or you have been living under a rock for the last 10 years. Either way, this website probably isn’t for you…

How many friends do you have… Wait, let me start again. How many (sad?) people do you know that seem to spend most of their free time on Facebook? Lots, right? Well don’t you think it would great for you website to have a presence on Facebook then?

Great! The only issue is, you are not really allowed a Facebook profile if you are not a real person. That is, a website isn’t really supposed to have a Facebook profile. Depending on how you go about it, you might get away with it. The safer bet is to start a group about your website. But please, only do this if it is going to benifit other memebers of Facebook.

Do you run a social kind of website?

There are only certain kinds of websites that can have a presence on social networks, whilst benifiting the community. For example, if you run a forum or a car enthusiest website, perfect! But if you run a shopping website or a directory, then having a social network presence is not likely to help you and any attempt to is just going to anoy other users and be a waste of your time.

Final thoughts…

Like I said, keep up with the latest trends: what’s the new search engine, what’s the new social networking website, what browser is popular, what do people want… These are what will bring you success. Hard work and plenty of (constant) research is the only way. So while your “friends” are hanging on Facebook, doing something constructive and read an SEO-related article or if you can’t keep yourself away, take note of WHY Facebook or Twitter is so popular, how it works, why it works and how you can improve your websites…
