(Almost) 1 Year On – What have I learnt?

25th November, 2009

I’ve been doing this websites thing for almost 1 year. So what kind of advice do I have for people in the same boat as me?
I know everyone says this, but I will try to elaborate a little on what it actually means (to me at least).

Find a niche! Now, that doesn’t JUST mean make a website that doesn’t have much competition and you’ll have success. Even niches have a lot of competition, because everyone has the same idea as you!

The most important thing is to understand your audience and even more important is to find them where most (or few) other people are looking. For example, everyone thinks that Google is the only search engine. Of course, if you think this, that is just ignorant (probably not your fault, this is what most people think). Google is extremely popular. But this is a bad thing, because people know this and that means you are going to have a great amount of competition.

So what I am trying to say is, promote your website on less competitive search engines and websites. For example, YouTubeKeep.com wouldn’t have the traffic it does if I didn’t have the Firefox Add On driving it to my website. I have a huge amount of competition on Google, so there is very little point putting all my time into trying to get that SERP (search engine results pages) rank from 1,000 to 100. The truth is that most people will not look beyond the first page (or two).

Think of a unique way to promote your website, or promote your website on a search engine that has a lot less competition for your targeted keywords. If you are serious about it, you can use a keyword research tool to help you out with this. But a little common-sense and an understanding of search engines and SEO in general is all you really need.

And again, remember, Google is not the only search engine or the only way to get traffic to your website!
